The Omnivore’s Dilemma

Michael Pollan has a great sense of humour and knows how to ponder a problem properly … from all sides. We mostly don’t stop and think about stuff to any depth or conclusion and I think we would be the better for it. Take this book whose subtitle is “a natural history of four meals”, Mr. Pollan looks at the food source of four meals. He’s like a dog with a very large bone … chews away at it until there isn’t anything left. Did I say he was funny? We do have a lot of choices about what we eat … hence the dilemma. Our home is ostensibly vegan, maybe even what I would call ‘cranky vegan’. In addition to no meat, poultry, fish, and dairy, there is no processed, sugar, added salt and rarely oils. So of course I wanted Mr. Pollan’s book to point in this direction. But of course he doesn’t, well, not really. He presents a load of information and leaves the decision making to the reader. Drats! Great read though.

Weekend away

“We don’t accomplish anything in this world alone … and whatever happens is the result of the whole tapestry of one’s life and all the weavings of individual threads from one to another that creates something.” - Sandra Day O’Connor

This wonderful quote comes from having dinner on Sunday night at Foundations, a vegetarian restaurant in Vancouver. I guess I should back up and say why we were there, otherwise the point of writing this entry will be for naught!

We have been looking for some time now at the possiblity of joining an ecovillage when we finish working at our current jobs. This comes from a whole-hearted agreement of the principles of the ecovillages we have researched. So long story short, we went to Vancouver and then on to Chilliwack where there is the Yarrow Ecovillage Society. We met with their spokesperson and had a tour. We think we may have found our future!

The rest of the weekend was spent with Ruth and Doug (sister and brother-in-law) who live in Mission. We had our very first Wherry rowing lessons and generally enjoyed every minute of our weekend away. Including a trip to MEC, Kidsbooks, and Foundations, which is where I started! Do put this restaurant on your to do list … I’m certainly looking forward to my next trip to Vancouver.
