There are so, so, many barns everywhere you look in Saskatchewan, and they are most often different. Shape of roof, cupolas, size, windows, doors, degree of deterioration, setting, and of course the contents. We are typically very nosy when the barn is located in an unused farm yard, or what seems to be vacated. Those barns that are empty are few and far between. Mostly they are used for stacks of wood. Sometimes there seems to be enough wood stored to build a small house! Others have old farm equipment, but most have a lot of junk. It has been fun stopping to explore and even more fun photographing them. I could make them the subject of a real study, but I’ve just a few too many other things to do.

These pickup trucks are part of the landscaping at the Riverbend 50’s Blacktop Diner not too far from the Petrofka Bridge on Highway 12 north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. We always think of motor vehicles sitting on their tires, not planted in the ground at a pretty crazy angle, but here they are!

If you’re in the neighbourhood, stop and see the ‘Big Tree’ too! Watch for the sign just before the bridge coming south or after the bridge going north. Perhaps better directions to the tree are “The tree is accessible along the “tree road”, which runs east from Route 12, about 10 km south of the town of Blaine Lake.” And I now have pictures of ‘the Tree’ too. Trees do grow bigger than this in many places, just not in Saskatchewan!

Just in time for more -30 weather, my sister Ruth is coming for another visit. I think she likes Yukon! I have the week off and we will find lots of time to do nothing and then rest afterwards. I expect we will also don winter apparel and wander about taking photos. Winter is a great time to see things differently. I might also learn about white balance now that I know such a thing exists. Okay, only three more sleeps to go.

Late September Lawrie and I, along with our friends Chris and Sarah, went canoeing on the McQueston River in the Mayo area of Yukon. Ostensibly we were moose hunting, but come home with a moose we did not. I thought I would get that out of the way straight off! Lawrie has been on this river hunting moose many times, a favourite place, you could say. I’ve been on the trip twice, but not recently. We thought it would be nice to do it one last time prior to leaving Yukon.

The weather didn’t look like it was going to cooperate much so Chris arranged a very nice start to the trip by reserving cabins at the Moose Creek Lodge that was supposed to be closed for the season, but wasn’t really quite yet. We arrived there at 10 pm after the four hour drive from Whitehorse on Thursday evening. It was raining and not especially warm. Nice to know we could get up in the morning after a comfortable sleep and have a hot breakfast cooked by the proprietor. Our tents would still be dry too!

After breakfast, Chris and Lawrie took the take out vehicle to McQueston bridge about 15 minutes further north, then returned to pick up Sarah and I, the gear and the Os. Then we were off to Mayo to pick up Loralee who had kindly consented to do our shuttle for us. We arrived at the put-in about 2 in the afternoon. There had been rain on the gravel road so both canoes had a serious coat of mud. After cleaning them up we loaded in the gear and started down the river. The early part of the river is a bit narrow with lots of tight corners. Chris and Sarah were a bit nervous, but did a grand job of maneuvering and succeeded in avoiding taking a swim.

So for the best part of a week we paddled, set up and took down camp, fought cold extremities, called moose, took photos, kept the Os quiet while more moose calling went on, saw a pack of wolves, a lynx, northern lights, two cow moose and one calf, and called moose, cooked and ate a pretty substantial amount of food, and called some more moose. Here are a few of those photos!

It seems these five weeks are blasting past. We have plugged a lot of activities into the time, along with working (albeit 4 days a week) and gardening. I think Lawrie actually did most of the garden work though. Now we focus on just seeing Whitehorse, and that was fun. When you live in a place, you do see things, but not really look at them very often. Having Ruth visit and also being aware that this is our last summer here was a great opportunity to really look at the interesting things in this city we have called home for the last 13 years. So here are a few of the photos I took, many more are found by clicking here or go to Photos and explore from there.

So week number 4 and there are too many options of what we could do this weekend. In the end we decide to sleep in our own beds, do a day trip to see Skagway and then whatever after.

Bright and early, maybe about 10 am, we are on the road to Skagway. Of course we have to stop at Emerald Lake, Carcross, and a couple other pretty places.

Skagway doesn’t change its essence much. It is always fun to visit though. Interesting to see how many cruise ships are in and what the Americans are wearing this year. Okay, that is more gag me, than fun. It was a beautiful warm day and we did enjoy ourselves.

We stopped at the world smallest desert just out of Carcross on the way home. Lawrie and I haven’t ever stopped here, so now is the opportunity. The sand was warm and nice to walk on with bare feet.

After another four days of work, or did we only work for three and take an extra day off? Whatever. We pack up the night before and take off along the Alaska Highway going north or north-west or maybe even more west. Whatever the direction, we are going to Haines Junction and then leaving the Alaska Highway for the Haines, Alaska highway now travelling pretty much south. If this was confusing, just wait, it could get worse.

Now that we are months later I can’t remember too many details. Where exactly you stop on the highway to access the trail to Samuel Glacier I can’t say. It is someplace not too far from the border, on the right side, and there is an outhouse and very large parking area. My former colleague Richard had done this trip and his pictures were amazing. My photos aren’t near so interesting, but I think we arrived when the flowers were in bloom, whereas they were either finished or Richard isn’t into flower photos! Check his photos out here to see what I mean!

The hike to Samuel Glacier is about 8 kms long and follows an old Cat trail most of the way. There is at least one fairly large stream that you cross, so don’t forget to bring some footwear to do the crossing with – unless you can walk on water?

It took us the better part of the morning, but we stopped a few hundred times to take flower pictures. Beautiful day … lovely evening … but it was very grey in the morning so our thought to hike to the top of the nearest mountain was dampened by low clouds. We enjoyed the morning, but decided to pack up and attempt to be out before it really rained on us. We almost made it!

After working four days, we dashed up the North Klondike Highway to Dawson City (where Lawrie & I, Jon and Chris lived from 1990 to 1994). This trip will likely be my last to this community and I was happy to be seeing it again. This is the Dawson City Music Festival weekend and we have tickets! We meet up with friends from Australia during the weekend and also do a vehicle shuttle from Minto Landing for some Whitehorse friends that are paddling to Dawson.

Besides taking in the Music Festival, I take Ruth to the Gold Dredge #4 out on Bonanza Creek, wander the Museum, visit the Visitor’s Centre, go up the Top of the World Highway, and also up the Dome (the hill behind Dawson). We camp at the Klondike River Campground about 1/2 hour south of Dawson. It is quiet there and we didn’t actually have a choice as the closer campground is full several hours before we arrive Thursday night. We end up thinking it a blessing in many ways. The weather was hot and dry and we enjoyed every minute.

My dear sister Ruth has come and gone, and is missed sorely. But she was here for five weeks and we had a blast. I’m thinking I’ll do a post for each week she was visiting and this will be week one.

Sunday, July 8th, Ruth arrived from Vancouver early afternoon and I returned home from Olds and Calgary at about 11 pm. Lawrie did a grand job of showing Ruth around Whitehorse prior to my flight arriving. We spent the week working and I must say that was fun and very useful as I currently have way too much work!

Our first weekend we spent with Sarah, Chris, Sarah’s mom, Chris’s Mom and Dad, and four dogs. We walked, fished, looked at mushrooms, played games, sat around a campfire, visited, and generally had a very nice time.

In the meantime we had a very nice last couple of days as you can see from these photos.

Excellent flight from Cancun to Toronto. Customs was completely empty when we arrived and I think there was a customs officer at every single security kiosk … this is unheard of in Toronto. I was amazed and delighted too! Good job Pearson International and Customs Canada. Now we needed to figure out what to do with seven hours. Problem here is that it is a holiday Monday. Not exactly a good night to find something interesting to do. So we found a couple art and museum displays at the airport to look at, both well worth the time spent. Had supper, wandered about and played on the moving walk ways and then decided to sign up for a days’ internet access and update the blog!

After our red eye flight to Vancouver and then all day there, we will arrive home at about 7 pm tomorrow. We are looking forward to a vocal greeting from the Os and sleeping in our own bed. All this is to say we enjoyed Mexico, but are going to be glad to arrive back at home.

Yes there is a theme to these pictures … silly titles and multiples! This is what happens when one has way too much time on their hands. Cheerio!
